Barby's 21 day challenge is complete!

I gave myself a challenge - track everything i eat and try to move a little every day for 21 days and I am happy to say that I just completed the challenge! I used my fitness pal to track what I was eating and it was ugly. I had no idea how horrible my eating habits were, especially sweets. I thought I had cut back but they still dominated my tracker. I also made time for exercise every day, most days I rode my recumbant bike but some days all I could make time for was a quick 10 minute stretch. I love riding my bike. I just plug my kindle fire into the speakers and watch hulu while I ride and before I know it a half hour has gone by. My goal was to be able to fit into all those clothes that are hanging in my closet but most fit about the same. I did lose 8 lbs and my husband says he can see a difference but until those clothes start fitting better I'll be a little skeptical. I went out and bought some bigger jeans and shirts and that has helped a lot with my confidence. I know that sounds crazy but there's something about clothes that fit - even if the size is bigger I still feel comfortable with myself.

The place area I have seen the most results in are my habits. I think twice about what I'm eating because I don't want to have to write it in my tracker or go over my calories (or even worse, I don't want my friends to see that I had two brownies that day, lol). This past week we have been busy painting the kitchen and little time for anything else, including snacking and sitting on my butt watching tv. I found that I was snacking less and still was not hungry. I know that alot of health guru's say to eat several small meals a day but that just makes me want to eat more. I think for me the best approach is a solid breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an afternoon snack. I seem to function best that way. Now that the kitchen is done I'll be able to start cooking again and going to the farmers market. I can't wait to start growing my own but i'll have to wait until next year for that. Hopefully by then that closet of clothes will be fitting quite nicely.

September Goals

I logged into my fitness pal and updated my weight - 162 baby! And it said I should update my goals since I haven't done it in awhile. Do you know what it calculated for me?! That I need to eat 1200 calories a day - SERIOUSLY!!! Do you know how hard it is for me to get to 1800?! I'm going to manually adjust it so that it says 1500, then maybe I'll get to 1800. Right now it says 1800 and I'm normally around 2000, so MAYBE if it says 1500, I'll get to 1800??!!?!
1200 calories, who does that?! My goodness. I'm trying to lose weight and be healthy, not starve myself. Goodness. Sorry, I'm going to be dwelling on that stupid number all day.
That's right! Changing the plan - 1500 calories. Goal is still the same - lose weight in a healthy way. No starvation here. Only realistic steps.
One more little motivational piece...
I need reminding of this one! I get so discouraged when I think of my arm flab and that my legs are still chunky and dimply, but I really have come a long way - 40 lbs. That's nothing to be disappointed with! I didn't get big overnight, and I'm not going to shape my body the way I want to overnight. I really am very proud of myself for sticking with this lifestyle. It takes a lot to change your life and habits, and I need to realize that and be proud of me for doing it!
Okay, goals for September. I've gone two months without setting any goals, and I feel lost. I don't like not blogging or having a goal which leads me to my first goal:
1) Blog more then once a week!
Sorry I've been gone so much lately. I don't have a reason, I just haven't been blogging, and I miss it! I would say blog every day, but I'll shoot for once a week right now and be proud of myself for doing that and more.
2) Eat clean.
This is a work in progress for me. Every meal, every day, every week I get better. I'm not perfect, not even close, but I'm so much better then I was a few months ago, and in a few months I'll be even better. My meals are definitely more balanced and my calories are getting under control - staying between 200-400 calories a meal. I am eating 5-6 small meals a day, and it really does give you energy.
I use 1 Tbsp of flax seed a day (usually in my oatmeal). I was using bee pollen too, but I ran out. I need to go and buy some more because bee pollen will give you some serious energy!! I really liked it; although it does change the taste some, but not enough that I don't like it.
3) Exercise 6 times a week.
This usually isn't a problem, but I want to write it down so I stick with it. Yesterday was one of those weird days where I probably did too much. Morning 3 mile walk (did a little more then normal because I had to back track and find my sons shoes - LOL); afternoon 2 mile walk to take the kiddos to the park; TF in the evening followed by a 2.8 mile walk/jog with Tabitha and the double jogger. Boy was I beat last night!
So, anyway, this is a goal because I've got 2 vacations this month - heading to my folks place for 6 days and then later this month I'm going to my Uncle's house at the beach for 4 days. I want to try and get some type of exercise done at both places. I wrote it down, so now I just have to make it happen.
4) Lose 1 lb a week.
I'm hesitant to put down a weight goal, but since I still haven't hit the 150's yet it will continue to be a goal. I won't say 2 lbs a week because I've yet to actually do that consistently. Even 1 lb a week might be ambitious for me, but here we go!

Day 68, TF

68 days in. Woo-hoo!! Last night was Low HIIT 25 and Sculpt 30. I'm still not a big fan of the Low HIIT's, but I think it's just because they feel so slow compared to the normal one's. This morning I woke up and stretched and it pulled all across my chest - guess those bands were working yesterday!
Tonight it's Fire 55EZ. The never ending workout! I asked Steph to bring along her weight gloves, I'm going to give them a try and see how it makes my arms feel. The flapping is really driving me nuts.
I'm not sure if I said anything, but my workout buddy Steph is leaving. Her hubby got orders and in October they're moving on. So sad. One of the worst parts of being military. Then, on top of that, Tabitha found out she's expecting baby #4! So, I'm essentially losing both of my workout buddies. So very, very sad. Tabitha is still going to workout, she'll just have to modify; at least until a doctor tells her otherwise. I'm excited for her, and sad at the same time. It won't be long though, next summer she'll be back into it full swing.
She still wants to run too, or at least walk/run which is fine with me - easier on my body with the double jogger. I've been run/walking a lot lately and it's helping.
Next blog to come - goals! There, I said it, now I have to go and write it!

TF, Day 62

62 days into TurboFire and sculpt and tone are still kicking my butt. I did Tone on Monday and yesterday my butt/thighs were sore. Wonder what will be sore tomorrow?!
I'm sad that TF will be over in 3 short weeks. It's been a great, fun program. We are venturing away from the beachbody products for our next workout set. Tabitha bought something called Tap Out which is supposed to be based on MMA fighting. No weights, just bands. I don't really know a lot about the program, she just wanted to try something new.
I really miss the weights. I'm feeling flabby. Seriously, it's annoying. When I run I swear my arm fat flaps in the breeze. HA! I was telling Steph tonight that the longer we're away from actually lifting the less toned I feel. I know the bands are supposed to be just as effective, but I'm not feeling it. I'm a little worried about the next program we're doing.
My running is going well. I've been using the jogging stroller a lot more, so my runs are not as smooth. I take a lot of walk breaks, but I go longer; I do 4-5 miles instead of 2-3. It's a nice break. The kids like being in the stroller and it gives me a little "peace" for an hour. I took the kids to the playground today and on the way home instead of going straight back through the woods, I took the long way and went straight up this giant hill. My thighs were screaming at me (they were a little sore to begin with). Gotta love the burn!
Tomorrow it's Fire 30. One of my favorite TF workouts!

Day 60 - TurboFire

60 days into TurboFire already! I still don't really see a difference in my body when I look at my photos between day 1 of TF and day 60. Here are my stats (Day 1 / Day 60):
Weight: 169 / 164
Chest: 37 / 36.5
Waist: 35 / 34
Arm (rt): 12.5 / 11.5 (lt): 12.5 / 12
Hips: 38.5 / 37
Abductor: 44.5 / 41
Thigh: 26.5 / 26.5 (same on both)
I've officially lost more weight with TF then I did with any of the other programs I completed (and I still have 30 days to go!!). I think the reason I can't really see the difference in my photos is because of my shape. I've always been heavier on bottom and I'm wearing black pants with my legs together in all of them. My friend Patti put the photos side by side for me.
Day 1 of P90X back in December 2011 and Day 60 TurboFire August 2012:
It'll be getting colder soon so I'll put the blue outfit on again and see what happens. I still don't see much of a difference, but there is a huge one - 20 lb difference in these two photos. The pants in the blue outfit are compression pants...probably shouldn't have worn one's that "hold me in" either. LOL
Patti put together one more set for me and this time I do see a BIG difference. This one is a 40 lb difference! I'm wearing normal clothes too. The pink shirt is April or May 2011 and the black outfit is from last week.
Wow! I'm doing pretty good. It's been a slow, steady process, but maybe that means I'll be able to maintain it a lot easier then if it just fell off of me.

Running with my Garmin 305

So far I am LOVING my "new" running toy!! I absolutely love being able to glance down and see not only how far I've run but how fast too! It's so awesome. I've gone on two walk/run's with it (yesterday and today). At first I thought the watch was awkward because it was so big, but honestly you don't even notice it once you start moving (same with the heart rate monitor band around my chest). I am so very glad I found it for sale!
I am doing a "Get to the shore for summer" challenge. I've managed to run 68.2 miles since June 1st! I've got 72 more miles to go to make it to the shore by Sept 22nd. That means I need to get moving. I've got to run about 12 miles a week to make it, and I will make it!
Another exciting thing that happened to me today - I stepped on the scale and I saw a number that I haven't seen since boot camp - 10 years ago!!!!!!!!!!! WOO-HOO!!!! I'm so excited. It feels really good too. Time to focus and get to my next goal - the 150's. Numbers not seen since high school, and also the smallest I've ever been. Here we go!!

Day 49, TurboFire

I'm still doing really well with TurboFire! Tonight was Core 20 and Stretch 40. Tabitha and I spent 4 hours pushing our kids all over the National Zoo today, so I was very happy to have a short workout. We ended up skipping the Stretch 40. It probably would've felt good on our tired muscles though.
Tomorrow starts week 8, Recovery Week. I'm not sure how much of a recovery week it is though since we're still doing Fire 45 and Fire 30. At least there will be no Fire 55 (I swear that's the never ending workout).
I'll be posting photos and updated measurements at the end of next week. I haven't been doing so well with logging what I eat. It's been really hit or miss since Chris left. Honestly, I've been eating a bunch of crap and didn't feel like logging it. Tomorrow I'm going to go back to logging every day...which ties right into my Sister's 21 day challenge. I'm going to join her and log every day.

Garmin 305

I bought a new toy today! I got a Garmin Forerunner 305 off of one of the base for sale pages for $60!!! They retail for over $200. I've spent my evening doing software updates, charging the battery, and cleaning it all up (seriously soaking the heart rate straps and arm band - eww!). I'm waiting for it to finish charging so I can play with the set-up and screens. I want to wear it on my run tomorrow!! I can't wait to see what all it can do.
I even came across a website that goes into how to set it up and use it for triathlons!! I'm going to have so much fun with this one. Now to see if I can sell my bodybugg.

Barby's 21 Day Challenge

Today I am starting a 21 day challenge. For the next 21 days I will track everything I eat  and I will work out every day whether it's a 5 minute yoga session in the morning or an hour on my bike. I need to see what I am eating and where I can make changes and I also need to move. The last few months I have put about 20 lbs on with all the stress of buying a new home. I tried not to let it bother me and to try and keep it managable. I knew I'd take it off once we were in the house and settled but that doesn't help every morning when I go to get dressed and most of my clothes don't fit.

Tracking can be so intimidating but it is so effective, especially when you go over. I made my own pizza tonight and was surprised by how many calories were in it. I had a reasonable portion and while I would love another piece, the thought of having to add any more calories to my day is preventing me from having more. I have really been struggling with motivation lately and while I know I will take all the weight off, I'm having trouble taking that first step. I am tired all the time and the heat hasn't helped. It's also really hard carrying all this extra weight around. I feel it everywhere, like sacks sewn onto my body. I bought a recumbant bike that I ride 3-5 days a week but my weight has stayed pretty consistent the last couple weeks. I have been trying to watch my calories, eat out less, and incoroporate more clean foods into my diet but I'm just not losing any weight. That is why I decided to do the challenge. I want to get this weight off and this time my reward will be a closet full of clothes that fit me.

First 8K!

I ran my very first 8K this morning with Tabitha!!! It was a fantastic race - plenty (I mean TONS) of food. They had coconut water, oranges, bananas, Panera bagels, water, crackers, breads, Smoothie King smoothies, granola bars - all FREE! There were a ton of volunteers and plenty of water stations. Every mile was marked with a great big sign. The only cheesy thing about the whole race was at the end they gave you a Hawaiian lei - that was a bit weird. Other wise it was all good.
Tabitha and I took a photo together before leaving her house, but I don't have that one right now, so here is just me.
This was another small race though (I'm sure they'll have a ton of food left over) - only 140 people total running the 8K. We started off towards the middle of the pack and at a pretty decent pace. When we hit mile marker one a volunteer yelled, "8:18." What?! Holy cow!! We instantly slowed down. No way we could do the whole thing if we kept that up. I was pretty impressed though because we were just doing a normal pace. There were 2 MAJOR hills on this course. We ran up about halfway and then walked (I was huffing and puffing just walking them). Serious hills. It was fairly hot (around 80's) and humid today too.
Our goal was to finish under 60 minutes. We thought that sounded good with being our first 8K and really only our second time running that far. We finished 75th and 76th (I was 76th) out of 140 people with my time being 51:25 (a 10:25 minute pace).
I am SO proud of myself!!! It was a really good run for us. The kids stayed with Tabitha's husband and kids at her house and had a great time, so it was an all around good morning for my family.
