Day 50, CLX/Insanity

Tonight was CLX Push 1 and Insanity cardio abs. It was a great workout as usual. Those push-ups at the end of CLX are killer! I actually like the Insanity cardio abs. I think it has some pretty good moves in it - my favorite is the last one (high/low planks).
I feel really sore tonight - mostly in my shoulder blades. I'm really struggling with typing something tonight (as if that's not obvious), but I feel as if I have to write something. I guess I did blog on goals this morning, so that should count for something - right?! LOL
Tomorrow is Insanity Plyo Cardio Circuit - UGH! At least I'm only doing Insanity twice a week now.

May Goals and Weekly Weigh-In

Weekly Weigh-In: down 2 lbs. Yep, I lost the two pounds I gained last week and had lost the prior week. I don't know how I went from losing and gaining the same one pound to gaining and losing the same two pounds, but I did.
I was super frustrated about those two pounds this past week so I overindulged all week, and I lost those two pounds which just made the whole process even more frustrating. When I focus on what I'm doing and track every day, diligently, I gained two pounds. Last week I overate (had chocolate, pizza, ice cream) and I lost two pounds. I don't know what is going on with my body. I'm wondering though if it takes time to register...does that make sense? Does your body absorb and burn everything right away? It can't possibly take an entire week for it to process your food/exercise choices. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the choices I make and the results I get.
What I do know for sure is that I felt like crap all week - I ate bad, and I felt bad, and the scale went down. The week prior I ate well, and I felt great, but the scale went up. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I like feeling good though, so I'm going to continue to track and just see what happens.
On to May Goals.
1) Weight. To lose 4 pounds.
I was going to say three, but since I'm up and down by two right now, I'll go with four. If I can manage to lose one pound a week, I'll reach goal.
2) Food. To track every day, even on weekends.
This one will be tough since weekends are the hardest time for me to track, but I've got a plan. I'm going to write it in a notebook, so that even if I can't get on the computer during the day I can enter it all at night or the next morning. Once I get my calories under control, then I'll start focusing more on the food choices.
3) Coffee. I'm lowering the number of TBSP.
I always put four. It gives it a nice color and a good flavor for me. I'm lowering it to three for the first week. I was talking to Chris about this one. The week I lost two pounds I only had one cup of coffee a day, the week I gained two I had 2-3 cups a day. Chris doesn't believe they are tied together, but he said maybe start with lowering the number of TBSP I use, work my way down to only one. So, this month I'm going to get it down to only two.
4) Running. 9 miles a week.
Right now I'm averaging around 8 miles a week. I'm going to set my goal at 9 and see how it goes. I created a challenge in my running group on Facebook. We are going to run 40 miles in May. If I stay on track it should be more then doable. I've also got my first BIG race this month, and it's not just any race, but a FUN one - the Warrior Dash! It's going to be awesome!
5) Workout. At least 5 times a week (doesn't include running right now).
I've cut out one Insanity workout a week, so I'm at 5 workouts. Three CLX, two Insanity. I want to keep that up for the month of May. I also need to determine which workout program I want to start in June. I want to do TurboFire, but I also bought Brazil Butt Lift, and I want to keep running. Should I do strength training? Will I lose some of my results if I don't have a weight program? Which weight program should I do - P90X or CLX again or Jamie Eason's 12 week program? Things to think about and work on this month.

Sunday, Run Day

I met up with the girls this morning and went for a 3.6 mile (give or take) trail run on base. It was a great run with lots of hills. The trail loops around the golf course and a good bit of it is in the trees which makes for a really pretty run. We ran the entire thing in a little under 40 minutes.
It's a shame we won't be able to do the course again (they are closing parts of it down permanently starting Tuesday). Hopefully they'll establish another one on base sometime in the near future. I really like trail runs. I might have to do some research and find some off post that we can do; ones that aren't too far away.
Tomorrow it's back to CLX Push and some Insanity cardio abs. Should be fun!

Day 47 CLX/Insanity

Today was a run day, CLX Push 3 day, followed by ab burner day! I got to run without the kids again (love having Chris home on leave!), but I also ran without friends. It was just me and the road today...that and a crappy MP3 player selection. I mean, seriously, it's been so long since I ran with music that it was just pathetic. Come on who runs to "...don't wanna be all by myself, all by myself, don't want to live all by myself..." followed by "...OMG Becky look at her butt, it is so big..." Seriously! Ha, ha. And in the middle of a run is NOT when you want to be trying to figure out how to change songs and find playlists. I spent most of the run being distracted by what song was on and how to get past it. I did manage to set my watch for 30 minutes though, so I ran until it started beeping.
Overall it was a really nice run today, music selection aside. I was able to go off road and run on a lot of side trails. Those trails aren't on the maps, so I had to gestimate how far I ran. I figured around 2.9, so even though I was running solo I still managed to go the same distance as I do with the girls. That made me happy!
I think it was a day for solo workouts because I did Push 3 and ab burner alone as well. Chris was having a co-worker over tonight for a study session and he was bringing his wife along, so I did my workout early so we could all hang out. Katelynn tried helping me by half hanging on my dumbbells as I was trying to lift; Chris quickly rescued me (I mean her) by putting Peter Pan on youtube for her to watch.
Push 3 is my favorite of the Push series. I use my 12 lb dumbbells for the entire set, and could really use 20-30 lb dumbbells. Workouts like this one make me wish we were still at the base gym so we could use the heavier weights, but I should still get results with the 12's. Only two more weeks then it's time for Recovery week followed by the Lean phase of CLX. After the Recovery week our Insanity workouts will only be once a week and it'll be the Fast and Furious/Pure Cardio workout. Should be interesting; I guess it's because Insanity is only a 60 day program. We also get 2 rest days a week. I might go a little stir crazy!
Chris took this photo of me this afternoon, and I thought it made me look skinny. LOL You can really see the difference in my face/neck from before. Ah, something is working!!

Day 46, CLX/Insanity

Insanity Max Interval Plyo - OH MY GOODNESS! I'm pretty sure I spent most of this workout cursing Shaun T. It's all part of the love, hate, love relationship we have with each other. It was the same old, same old warm-up followed by stretching, then we got down to business. I found myself saying several times today, "we did this in P90X plyo." I was happy about that since it helped me modify some of the moves. First was the switch jumps - a P90X move (in fact in P90X we had to jump all the way around in a circle), so we knocked these out without any problems. Squat push-ups were next - OH MY! I loved these! These were the type of move you don't forget and you add into future workouts; just a great exercise. These were followed by wide in and outs. These weren't too bad (don't tell Chris I did them); you get into the plank position, but keep your legs wide, then you jump in and back out. I think keeping my legs wide helped because I did them and felt fine (I might be singing a different tune tomorrow). The last exercise before repeating this set 3 times was power jumps (another P90X move) which I just squated for (I do want to be able to run tomorrow).
After repeating 3 times we did V-pushups...one legged. We did these in P90X too, just not one legged. They were not bad at all. Then it was time for the next set of repeat exercises. It started off with something called Pogo. I laughed and told the girls that sounded like a toy I had as a kid...um, yea, it was. You stand on one leg, bend down, and then hop into the air. I did the move but didn't hop in the air, just did a calf raise. We did one similar to this in P90X too (told you I'd say that a lot!). The next move was a power push-up. Um, I did some of these too (don't tell anyone)...I just wanted to see if I could do them. You do a pushup and then jump your feet up and "stand" (you stay bent over and touch your toes), then jump back to push-up. After a few, I just started walking my feet in to help with any back/knee pain. Next was a lateral frog jump with a rainbow type arm move (yep, we did something similar to this in P90X); and then we finished the set with 16 pushups/16 mountain climber type move - um, yea. By the third round my arms were on fire from all those push-ups.
In between sets we did Mary Caterines and hop squats. Nothing crazy. I was starting to get nervous though, I wasn't sure I could do another set of repeat exercises, and after I saw the first move I got really nervous.
More push-ups, only this time they were a sideways type thing. They're hard to explain, but once you get set-up they aren't difficult to do. I really liked the next exercise - kickstand touch the floor; you get into the lunge position, then you bring your leg forward, jump up, and come back into the lunge. It was fun (just be careful how you land so you don't mess up your knee...I stopped jumping after a few). Next was 8 power knees/4 diamond jacks (for me that was power knees and some squats). The last move was a balance push-up - seriously?! Because my arms aren't jello already?! It's a pushup followed by an extended arm/leg when you push-up. Crazy, but super effective. I actually liked them. I was busy mentally preparing myself to do this two more times, when suddenly they started stretching - oh sweet happiness, we were done!!! Most of the workouts I feel like, that's it, but not this one. I was never so happy to see it end. It was a great workout, and I learned some moves (squat push-ups, kickstand touch floor, pogo) that I will add to my fitness routine in the future (because there is no way I'd ever repeat Insanity again...that would just be insane) ;)

Weekly Goals

I wasn't going to blog on my weekly goals this week because I feel like I've failed; however isn't that the whole point?
1) To lose 8 lbs. Well I lost 2 the other week and this week I gained 2. So for the month I'm at a total of 1. I don't think I'm going to hit 8 since next week starts May and it'll be time to set a whole new set of goals. I'm thinking my weight loss number needs to be more realistic, and while it's highly discouraging to say I want to lose 3 lbs next month that would be more realistic to what I actually have been able to accomplish.
2) To run 6 miles/week. Check! This is my favorite goal for the month of April. I'll be able to up it to at least 8-9 miles next month! YEAH!!
3) Clean up my diet. Sigh. I need to get serious on this one. I eat well, but I think that I'm sabotaging myself somewhere. I have to be since the scale went up. I'm eating more then enough (between 1800-2000 calories a day), so it must be the types of food I'm eating. Just because something is 200 calories does not mean that it's good for me. I'm going to focus a little more on the type of calories I'm eating not just how many calories.
4) One cup of coffee a day. Well this one went completely out the window last week. I'm pretty sure I had at least 2 a day, every day. I'm toying around with giving it up completely. This will be hard unless I can find something to replace it with that enjoy just as much, so maybe some hot tea. I think next time we go to the grocery store I'm going to snoop around the tea section and see what I can find.
5) Track food every day. The only time I'm bad with tracking food is the weekends and that's just because Chris is home so I don't take the time to get on the computer at every meal and enter what I'm eating. I need to start a list so I can just enter it at the end of the day. I was really bad with tracking on Monday and Tuesday this week because I put on 2 pounds and was so mad at the whole process - I tracked, but didn't enter all that I ate...it really wasn't pretty. I'm such an emotional eater.
One thing I'm going to add to my new set of goals next week will be my after workout snacks. I ran out of P90X recovery drink (which I was just using to finish it up anyway), and I don't have any protein powder in the house, so I need to figure out what I want to eat after my workouts and stick to it. I'd like to get back to drinking protein shakes after lifting, but I need something for after my runs and Insanity workouts.
I'll try and focus on making my goal's for May more attainable as well...it's going to require a little more thought and preparation, but it'll be worth it.

Day 45 - CLX/Insanity

Day 45! Half-way through the program - that's so exciting. I know that I owe all of my success to the two wonderful Ladies that I workout with each and every day. Without them I doubt I'd be nearly as successful.
Last night was Insanity Max Interval Circuit, the 59 minute "mother" of all Insanity workouts (as Steph likes to call it). Last time my kids kept me pretty distracted, but last night it was just us girls, and we killed it! That was a great workout, and probably my favorite of the set. It reminds me of TurboFire with the exercises being grouped together with short 30 second breaks inbetween. I'm sure it was somewhat "easier" for me because I modify, but even though I'm modifying I'm still dripping with sweat and  breathing as hard as the girls. I truly believe you can modify and still get just as intense of a workout. I've yet to figure out how to modify the burpee type moves so I just do them very slowly and try not to land with a lot of force. I still felt as if a truck ran me over this morning - my entire body ached, but in a good way. After some stretching I was able to move without any pain or stiffness, and by 9am I was more then ready for our 10am run.
We've decided to change up our running a bit. We were running for distance during the week, but with stopping at 2 miles we were only getting in about 23-25 minutes, so today we ran for 30 minutes, and you know what?! We managed to run 2.94 miles, and it felt great. Chris is on leave this week so I was able to run without the jogging stroller (hopefully that'll help my knees), but Tabitha still had her's so it was a good pace...lots of hills (not too many places on base that don't have them).
Tonight is PUSH 2 and some ab burner. Should be good as always.

Day 43, CLX/Insanity

Tonight was Chalean PUSH 1. My knees are still feeling sore and we did a lot of squats tonight, so I'll have to icy hot them again tonight. After my 5K Saturday morning I took it easy all weekend and today. I'm not sure what I did, so I'm going to change things up again. I've signed up for a couple races this year so running is definitely important. I'm going to continue doing CLX three times a week and run three times a week. Insanity will be cut back to twice a week instead of three. I'm hoping that helps. Chris is on leave for the next 2 weeks (before he leaves for 3 more weeks) so I'll be able to run without the jogging stroller, and I'm hoping that helps as well. I might also need new shoes. It could be the impact on my runs making my knees hurt. I'm tough on my shoes, so I should probably buy a pair just for running and running only.
As for the workout tonight, it went really well. I dropped from 12 lbs to 10 lbs for all the moves; maybe pushing up to 12 lbs was part of the problem on my knees?? I also did all 8 push-ups plus the 3 extreme without going to my knees (maybe doing them on my knees is bothering them??). Tomorrow is Insanity
Max Interval Circuit, yep, the "hardest one in the set," the mother of all Insanity workouts, the 59 minute one. UGH! We'll see how it goes without the kids!

Weigh-In Monday

I seriously need a swift kick in the a$$ this morning! I stepped on the scale and almost started crying. Instead of reading 172 or lower and finally being able to move a huge green stone from my jar over (symbolizing 10 lbs down) the stupid thing went up TWO pounds! I tracked every single day last week, and while it wasn't my best I certainly didn't overindulge enough to be up 2. If anything it should've been down 1 and right on goal.
I feel like sitting around moping and eating which is exactly what I don't need to do. Why do I let the scale control me like I do? It is just a number so why am I so upset? I work hard every single day. I lift weights, I run and do Insanity, I watch what I eat. All these things are making me stronger and making me feel better then I have in years, so why when I see the scale go up do I feel as if everything I do doesn't matter?
I'm so glad no one reads my blogs. How disappointing I must seem right now. Look people I do all this hard work and the scale doesn't move at all, in fact it goes up. Yea, that's really motivating to read about. I think it might be a rough day. Good thing I don't have a lot of food in the house. I should be feeling more focused and motivated to work harder. Yet all I can think about is since I started P90X back in October, got halfway, then Chris came home, then started again with the girls, finished, and am now doing CLX/Insanity I have lost a total of 7 lbs. That is so completely and totally frustrating.
It has to be my eating. Right? I mean I've been heavy my entire life...always weighing around 150. I've been above 160 for the past 10 years. I'm not sure why I think this should be so easy. Maybe it's because I keep seeing all these motivational posts, all these blogs on people who've done it, and they make it sound like they just did this one simple thing - I changed my eating, I started running, I started doing Insanity, blah, blah, blah. How come when I do the same things it doesn't happen. Something tells me that it's not that simple.
I am so proud of myself for how far I've come. I mean seriously - I'm fitting in smaller clothes, I feel super confident, and even sexy at times, and yet, one step on that damn scale and I feel as if I'm worth nothing. How can one stupid piece of equipment do that to me?
What happens if I throw the scale away? Well I won't do that - it cost a lot of money and I do obsess about it. I think I will however put it in the kids bathroom and out of sight for awhile. Move my weigh-ins to every other week, and then go from there. Maybe that's just dumb too. For once I'm at a loss.
I'm going to go and surf through my download folder, there has to be something there that will boost my mood.
Ah, this will do!
Yes body, you and me - we can do it! No more feeling sorry for myself. Today is a new day and I've got a workout to knock out tonight!

Earth Day 5K

Saturday was the base Earth Day 5K. Around 3am Chris walked into the house so I didn't have to run with the kiddos. I have to say it was extremely weird not having the jogging stroller. It's the only way I run these days, so running without was like forgetting my running shoes...it just felt like something was missing.

Thankfully, Steph remembered her camera! I didn't bring mine since I didn't have the stroller to store it in. I was enjoying an apple before the race when Steph wanted a photo, so I hid it behind my back for the picture. Explains my funny stance and look on my face - I think I had just taken a bite.
The weather couldn't have been any nicer. We started off next to the lake and completed a giant circle around it, weaving in and out on side streets and housing areas. I was running for awhile before I realized the course wasn't marked. All the other 5K's and the marathon relay I completed were marked with mile markers, but not this course. I thought that was a little odd, but aw well.
About 3/4's of the way in, Tabitha (next to me in the photo with sunglasses), was feeling awesome and I was starting to pull back a little (a stitch had started in my ribs, which means I was running faster then normal), so I told her to just go ahead. She took off on me! I think she needs a faster running partner. LOL
I kept her in my sights, and tried to keep up while picking people to catch and pass. I finally rounded the corner to the finish line and sprinted it across. They yelled, "28:45" or I think they did. I was too shocked. Did they just say something under 30?! OMG! How cool is that? My goal going in was to do it under 40, and I was hoping for around 35. I couldn't have been happier!
Well, I'm not in these photos, but they are from the race. 350 people signed up...
and it looks like I wouldn't have been alone with a stroller...
As it turns out the course was short!! The Commander had to get up and apologize (I imagine there are going to be some people in serious trouble this week). The course was only 2.92 miles. Well, that's only off by, what, .3 or so? That still means I would've finished under 30!!!! That made my entire weekend.
My knees are still a little sore, so today has been a nice relaxing, rainy day inside the house with the kiddos and hubby. It's back to the grind tomorrow!

Day 39 CLX/Insanity

Last night was Insanity max interval circuit. I was so exhausted when I got home from all the running around we did yesterday that I didn't blog (just sent Chris an e-mail and went to bed). I really wanted to blog on this workout though because it was just crazy. It's the longest Insanity workout we've done (59 minutes) and I didn't think it was EVER going to end. I will definitely have to bring more water when we do this one again next week; 1 bottle was NOT enough! My kids did pretty well too, but after about 40 minutes they started having meltdowns.
With this program you do 3 sets that you repeat 3 times with one or two extra exercises between sets. None of the exercises were particularly long though (probably a max of 45 seconds each). On the second set of repeated exercises we had to get on the floor to do these floor switch kick moves...
Denver decided that would be the perfect time to snuggle on my lap, so I did these (3 times) with him sitting on my stomach/chest. He loved it and laughed the entire time. I thought it was super cute. I obviously couldn't do the move the right way, but I was able to kick my legs up (you're supposed to jump from foot to foot as you kick...I just kicked).
Half way through the workout my right knee started to throb (it's still tender today). This is new to me. I've never had knee issues. I'm not quite sure what caused it since I do modify my moves (I don't jump for most of them which has helped my back immensely). I'm thinking it was one of two exercises in the warm-up. Either this one, a side-to-side jump rope twist move:
or the side-to-side floor hops (get in plank position and hop to the left, back to center, then back to right while in the plank):
I have no idea how to modify the plank position jumping moves. I imagine the force of my weight coming down while in a plank position is tough on my knees/back. Both of the top two positions were during the warm up.
Overall I actually really liked this workout. OMG - did I just say that?! There were a lot of moves that were actually fun: pedal power lunges (football sprints mixed with Mary Catherine lunges); push-up jacks (I really like these...yes, something is wrong with me); power strike (a jumping side-to-side move that includes punches); jump hooks (for me these were squat hooks - do 4 hooks, squat low - do 4 more hooks, then jump rope, switch sides); and plank punches (hold the plank and punch your arms forward one at a time).
This is what the people in the video (and us too) looked like when we were done...
Ha, ha, ha...awe, Insanity, how I love to hate thee.

Day 38 CLX/Insanity

That's right! The reason to lift heavy or go home. Tonight was PUSH 2. Wow! My shoulders were shaking and my legs were burning. We followed it with Extreme Abs - OH MY! Now that's an ab routine. My abs were on fire tonight. Love, love, love tonight's workout. Can't wait to do it again next week.
We ran today as well - 2 miles in 23 minutes, in the rain, with jogging strollers - we managed to cut 4 minutes off our time. No wonder I felt like my side was going to split open. We were hauling some serious tail! I think we were making up for that awful run in the heat on Monday.
I was over my calorie intake for the day. I was so cold. Nothing I did would warm me up (turns out I forgot to turn off the air since it's been so hot, so I turned it off, but didn't flip it all the way to heat and it was cold out today so the house sat at 67 degrees...on a cold, rainy day...until I realized what was going on). I had 3 cups of coffee, yes, THREE! So much for just one a day. That's 420 calories just from the coffee creamer (that's a lot even if it's natural stuff)! An entire meal!! I tried to make up for it with healthier, low cal meals, but I was still over for the day.
Lunch I made a huge chicken taco salad: blue corn chips, salsa, 4 oz chicken, 100 cal pack of Wholly Guacamole (love that stuff), 1 oz cheese, and black olives and tomatoes. It was delicious!!
Dinner was equally yummy! Scallops and brussel sprouts. I found the recipe in an old Oxygen magazine and I've been wanting to try it, but Chris doesn't like brussel sprouts, so it was the perfect meal for while he's away. I inhaled it! It was super yummy. I have some left, but I have no idea if scallops reheat well. It was actually my first time ever making them.
For years I've been telling myself that I would be so happy if I could just get my weight down to 150 and each and every week when I weigh myself and the scale either stays the same or goes up a pound or down a pound I get so frustrated. I'm working my tail off, eating better then I ever have, and I should be so proud of myself, yet all I can think about is that after all this time I'm still in the 170's, still in size 14's, and still embarrassed to put on a pair of shorts. Then today I read a friend's blog. This is what she said, "no matter what your scale or measuring tape says, know that it doesn’t define you. You’re awesome and amazing without it. Keep doing what you’re doing.. Keep pushing, keep working at it. This is about a lifetime change not a passing moment." I think it's funny - she always knows what to say to me and I don't even think she realizes it. Such awesome words that when read at just the right moment will inspire you because they do me. I'm not sure why it's so hard to believe in yourself, or to feel confident about the way you look. I don't think it'll ever get any easier for me, but I'm going to print out her words and put them on my motivational wall just the same!

Weekly Goals

I was getting ready to go to bed when I saw my calendar said, "Blog on Goals." Oh yeah, good thing I wrote that down. One week in and I'm doing really well with my goal's for the month of April.
1) Lose 8 lbs. Well, I lost 2 this week, so right on track.
2) Track food every day. I'm doing awesome with this one! The only time I missed was the weekend and I was just being lazy.
3) Clean up my diet. I'm still working on this one, but I'm better today then I was last week.
4) No more then ONE cup of coffee a day. Okay, so this one is tough for me. I would say that I did really well with this. I'm probably 4/7 this week. I'm going to have to mark it on the calendar on days I have more then one so I can get a better grasp on how much coffee I'm actually drinking.
5) To run 6 miles per week. Yep, right on track with this one too! On Wednesday - 1.82 miles, Sunday - 2.6 miles, and Monday - 2 miles.
I would say that I'm doing really good with my goals for now!

Day 37, CLX/Insanity

Ah, Insanity, how I hate thee. Tonight was Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning (not the one I said yesterday). It was only 46 minutes and it actually wasn't that bad of a workout. My bigger problem was the kids. We had the basketball court so lots of room, but of course they weren't happy with that, nope, not at all. Katelynn kept running back and forth between the gym and kids room and every time she left Denver had a meltdown and wanted to leave too. I told her she had to pick one and stay put, and of course that went over just great...right. Anyway, bodybugg says I burned 415 calories. I personally hate that you go, go, go and you don't have much to show for it. Yes 400 calories is better then none, but I was drenched tonight and I was thinking 550 calories.
My favorite exercise in the set was the football stance run with a drop to low plank and back up again. The only problem was it was hard to hear so I'd drop and never hear him say up, so I'd look at the computer screen, see them up, jump up, only to drop right back down. It was fun though. There were a few other new moves tonight that were interesting, but there were also a few that I just couldn't due if I wanted to walk tomorrow, which I do (in fact I want to run tomorrow), so I took it easy (that could be part of the low calorie number too)...when I say take it easy I mean that when we did diamond jacks (a jumping jack that when you jump up your feet come together so you look like a frog hopping up in the air) I just did squat jacks and when we did high knee/low/floor sprints I did high knees, low run, and then held the plank since those darn floor sprints still make my back sound like rice krispies (yes, I do try them just to see if it's getting any better, but nope, still there). But, regardless, I'm still modifying the moves, and I CAN NOT WAIT for Insanity to be over. I'm so glad that I didn't buy this program - it's just not for me. I do not ever see myself doing it again either.

Day 36, CLX/Insanity

Yeah for weight training! Boo for hubby being gone! I think I missed about 3 exercises which considering it's only 32 minutes long is a lot. There was so much going on at the gym tonight - first there were people in the kid room who said they had it reserved (which is NOT possible, but whatever), so the kids got to run around the weight room; then those people left and Denver had a complete and total meltdown because he had to stay in the kid room; part way into the workout the kids "escaped" and Denver came at me full-speed, so we let him stay in the weight room with us and of course the outlets aren't covered since no kids allowed and all, so what do you think he wanted to play with?! Yep, the outlets. Then he wanted to play with Steph's laptop that was playing our workout (which he thankfully didn't break but did almost spill his milk on - UGH)! So, yea, it was a rough workout. Katelynn on the other hand was a little gem and behaved very well in the kid room.
Tomorrow is Insanity and we should have the basketball court, so hopefully it'll be a little better for us. Now that's a workout I'm not looking forward too. Insanity Max Interval Circuit. 59 minutes of Insanity. Supposedly the hardest one in the set. If the kids are good it should be a great workout. If the kids are bad, I'll go hard with it next week. No biggie. It is what it is.
Anyway, back to Chalene. I liked tonight's workout. It's all about lifting heavy. No crazy lunges and squats while lifting, just lifting. We are only doing 6 to 8 reps per exercise so you're supposed to go super heavy (or go home)...
The heaviest weights I have are 12's which were fine for the arms, but I could've seriously gone a lot heavier on those squats. I'm not ready to purchase more weights though, so I'm going to make these work for me. She does talk about "thinking" the weights heavier, I don't know about all that. I'm assuming she means to literally feel every single movement and just focus and think them heavier. We'll see how it goes. ;)

Yep, this photo pretty much explains how I felt running today, and about how fast I was going. Today was a run day - UGH! It was so hot out there when we ran it felt as if we could've gone faster walking. Sweat was pouring off of me and I don't think it was because I was jogging - I felt like I was trying to run through quick sand. It was probably the worst run I've had so far. If this heat keeps up we'll have to start running earlier. Our next run will be Wednesday and then the Earth Day 5K is Saturday. I'm hoping they don't go as bad...looks like rain both times! HA!
And one more thing for tonight (sorry, Chris is gone so I'm extra "chatty"). I made a snack from the TF food guide (Tabitha is borrowing my CLX one...need to get that back) and I actually liked it and it made me feel full. After our run I made these rice cakes with 1 TBSP PB and 1/2 a banana (Katelynn ate the other half). I think the PB and bananas help hide the styrofoam taste that rice cakes tend to have. These will now be added into my snack rotation!
ALSO, yes, one more thing. I lost 2 lbs this week!!!!! WOO-HOO for Recovery Week's! I haven't lost any weight since the first week of CLX/Insanity (I guess the shock of a new routine...going from P90X to this, and now the change up in routine). I've also been really good about logging my food (except this weekend) and I'm working on staying around 1800 calories - 3 days in a row now! Woot-woot!
And while these jars (yes, I'm still using them, just haven't been losing any weight, so actually they've been kind of depressing to stare at) are a bit dusty, I got to move 2 more stones so now there are 9 stones in my weight loss jar. I'm moving one of the big green ones over when I hit 10 down!

Sunday, Run Day

Sunday, Sunday. Sigh. Chris got up and flew out this morning, so this week should prove to be very interesting. I hope my son handles the workouts okay (last time he stood at the door and cried the entire time). If not I'll join the girls on Tues and Thurs for Insanity (since I don't own that program) and just do CLX here at the house. I'm hoping it doesn't come down to that though.
I started a facebook page called Ft Meade Runners and today was our first group run. 5 of us showed up (I was only expecting 2!) and I think it went really well. We seemed to pair off and one girl kind of bounced between the two groups. The kiddos and I lead the way since I had the course mapped out (Katelynn kept asking me where the girls had gone since they were behind us - LOL). We did 2.63 miles in 40 minutes. Not horrible, not fantastic, but a fun run just the same.
Tabitha and I are meeting up for runs on Mon and Wed and then on Saturday it's the Earth Day 5K on base. Should be fun! Chris is catching a red eye back Friday night, so not sure if he'll be home in time or not, so I will probably be running with the kids. Should be interesting for 2 reasons: it's super early for them (have to be over there by 730 which means I need to be out of the house by 7) and it's supposed to rain (60% chance). UGH!
On the plus side today I came in under goal for my calories! I can't remember the last time that happened. YEAH! Looks like tracking is starting to work for me. Hope the scale is kind in the morning - Monday weigh-ins!

Day 34 CLX/Insanity

Finally Recovery week is over!!! YEAH!! The Insanity Core Cardio and Balance was a nice, easy workout this morning. I guess that's the great thing about boring routines. I told Steph, "that wasn't so bad, makes me feel nervous for Tuesday." On Tuesday this week when we did our first Insanity recovery routine it was so weird - we were all going way too fast. Now today it was like la, la, la, so I just know come this Tuesday we are going to be like WTF! Ha, ha. Aw, well. There is a reason that I'm doing a hybrid of Insanity and not the whole program.
We went grocery shopping today and stocked up for the week. I was reading through the TF food guide and she talks about the Michi's Ladder. I don't remember reading about it before, and I actually like the way it breaks everything down. It puts all the eat clean foods in one simple chart. A lot of the stuff we bought today were in the top 3 tiers, so that's pretty good. I'm going to print out a copy and stick it on my fridge so I remind myself to grab the good stuff.
I'm also working on catching up with my magazine stacks. I just read my copy of Oxygen from March. It has a section called, "Fuel your Fitness" and it's got a lot of great snack ideas. I can't wait to try Cottage Cheese Raisin Toast and the open-face curry chicken salad sandwich.
In my Runner's World magazine I came across an ad for the Endurance Challenge 5K Trail race at Great Falls Park!!! I'm definitely signing up for this one. It should be a lot of fun. It's on June 3rd. There is no way strollers will be allowed on the trail, but Chris should be here so that shouldn't be an issue.
I'm excited for this week's new workouts. In this phase the focus for CLX is on intense, heavy lifting. My heavies dumbbells are 12, so hopefully that'll be good enough for me. The Insanity workouts are going to start getting interesting too because they constantly change. It'll be the same 3 CLX Push routines for the next three weeks, but Insanity will change up every week. That'll keep it interesting!

Day 33 CLX/Insanity

Tonight we tried Brazil Butt Lift (BBL) 20 minute toning DVD that came as a bonus with the BBL I bought. OH MY GOODNESS! I was the only one of the 3 of us that liked it, but what was not to like?! Oh my! When we were done with the 20 minutes my butt was shaking like crazy. I haven't had a muscle react that way to exercise in quite some time. I l-o-v-e-d it! Looks like this workout is going to have to make it into my morning rotations. Um, guess that means I have to start a morning workout routine.
We followed it with the scheduled Recharge. I still really enjoy the 20 minute Yoga routine. It's a nice stretch. Today definitely felt like a rest day though. The workouts weren't vigorous and the bugg said my calorie burned for the entire day was just over 2600 (my goal is 2800/day).
Tomorrow morning is the final workout for recovery week, and personally, I couldn't be any happier. I can't wait for Monday when we enter the Burn Phase of CLX!

Day 32, CLX/Insanity

Recovery Week. SIGH. Insanity Core Cardio and Balance. I still thought it was boring. The girls like it because they feel the burn - LOL. I think the best exercises in the whole video are the very last two - hip flexor burners and shoulder burners in plie.
Hip flexor burners - for 90 seconds you stand on one leg. There are 3 exercises each 30 seconds. First you just bring your knee up and down, then you hold pulse the knee while at a 90 degree angle, and then for the final 30 seconds you extend your leg in and out while holding that 90 degree angle. It sucks. It burns. It's awesome.
Shoulder burners in plie - I don't know how long this one is, but it feels like a very long time. By the end your thighs are burning something fierce. You get into a plie squat position and then you flap your arms like a bird (feels weird and looks silly I'm sure), then you swing your arms forward and back while contracting your abs, followed by moving your arms above your head and back down (kind of like a jumping jack only your lower half stays still), and nope it's not over yet - 2 more to go. Extend your arms straight out and do arm circles forward, and then backward. Now you are done. Now your shoulders and thighs are screaming at you. Now the video is over.
Nothing before those 2 are anything to get excited about - same old, same old, but at a super slow pace that makes you feel as if something is off. Those last 2 are awesome and make the whole workout worthwhile.

On another note I am SUPER excited! My workouts for when Chris deploys (and for when I finish up this set) arrived today!!!! TurboFire and Brazil Butt Lift (BBL). These are the final 2 that I'm going to buy, and I can't wait to try them. I've heard awesome things about both. The only thing I'm worried about is that there is no strength training with either of them. I just know I'm going to miss it. I still have 60 days to figure out exactly how I want to do them. I might do both mixed in with some weight training. I want to do Jamie Eason's 12 week program (it's free). I need to research it a bit more...plenty of time for that. Lots to think about!
BBL came with a free 20 minute toning workout, so for our workout tomorrow we are going to give it a try followed by CLX Recharge (the 20 min Yoga workout).

Day 31, CLX/Insanity

Recovery Week. Tonight was #2 for CLX Recharge, and we did TurboFire Greatest HIIT's again too. I personally love, love, love Chalene! I think her workouts are fun and effective. I've started following her on facebook as well. I find her very inspirational and I'm going to have to add her book "Push" to my Birthday list this year...unless I break down and buy it when Chris is deployed (tempting!).
We ran this morning (1.82 miles in 22:40), so the Recharge workout felt really good tonight. I still don't like Yoga, but at least this one feels good and makes my muscles feel so relaxed afterwards. Isn't that the whole point of Yoga? P90X Yoga always just made me feel so tense.
Steph was snapping pictures again while we were doing TF...

I like the photos. I think they show how far I've come, and how far I still have to go. I was telling the girls about how in my new Weight Watchers magazine the editorial letter was about how he has maintained his weight for 3 years now and how it's been harder then the 9 years it took him to get there. It got us talking about our journey's: Steph said it's taken her 4 years, Tabitha 1 year, in February it was 1 year since I started changing things up again when I joined Weight Watchers with my Sister (lasted about 1 month, but I still get the magazines...love them!) and I made a few half-hearted attempts at working out. In July I started running again, September I started P90X, and in December I met this awesome group of ladies I workout with, and I haven't looked back since. My eating is still hit or miss, but my workouts have been consistent for months now. I'm at least half on track.
Tomorrow is Insanity...wonder if it'll be as boring. LOL

Day 30 - CLX/Insanity

Recovery week. This is going to be an interesting week because we are repeating the same 2 workouts all week. Kind of boring if you ask me, but since all the CLX/Insanity hybrids I found were the same it must work.
Tonight was Insanity Core Cardio and Balance. Talk about boring. It was a good workout - bugg says I burned 350 calories in 35 minutes, but oh so dull. It was Insanity in slow motion. Seriously, boring does not describe it well enough. It's slow enough that you can do every move and then some (totally understandable since it's recovery week), but why did it have to be so dull? I guess all the workouts would be this way if you weren't constantly jumping around. I kept glancing at the clock - 22min, 20min, 17min, 15min, 11min - it was never going to end.
I'm looking forward to running tomorrow.

Setting Goals

Everyone always says you should set some type of goal. I've always hated goals because that means I have to seriously think about what I want and make out a plan for accomplishing it. I've been doing some digging around and I've found several lists I've had made up and they all pretty much say the same thing - eat better and lose weight. I guess we know what I think are my biggest issues.
I've decided to make goals for the rest of April, and I'm going to post them where I can see them weekly - right on my calendar. I will make every effort to do updates on my goals at the end of the week and then make new ones at the start of every month. I've been wavering on my commitment lately, and it's time to change that. After all if I want to make the body I want to have I need to stay focused and motivated. Plus what is the point of doing all these crazy workouts if I can't even control what I'm eating. I've read that weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise...right now I'm probably 80% exercise and 20% diet. I workout on schedule 6 times a week, food is always hit or miss. I think it's time to change that up!
I still have my bedroom wall covered in a motivational poster but now all I do is walk past it. I think part of my monthly goal should be to redo the board (probably need to do that every month to keep it fresh). I also still have my weight loss jars, but sometimes those seem depressing because they stay the same. Goals, goals, goals. Let's get them started and let's get focused.
April Goals:
1) Lose 8 lbs.  Okay, how am I going to do this? By doing #2 and #3.
2) Track food every day. This will help me get to goal #1 and hopefully bust through this plateau. 8 lbs might be ambitious since I've been in a plateau for a few weeks now, but I'd be just as happy with 6 because that gets me out of the 170's!
3) Clean up my diet. This supports #1 and #2.
4) No more then ONE cup of coffee a day. I've been getting much better with this one especially since I've given up on the sugar free, fat free, and regular creamers. I now drink Coffeemate Natural which according the the ingredients has nothing bad in it - I can pronounce everything they put in it, and it's as close to eating clean with coffee as I can get. And one of the best parts - it doesn't leave any bitter after taste in my mouth like the fat free and sugar free types always did.
5) To run 6 miles per week. We were running 4, now we are going to add one more day a week to get us up to 6 miles per week.
Alright, I'm going to post and then print this one out. We'll see how focused I can get.

New Year's Resolution Update

A friend of mine on facebook asked if we have our goals written down. I started thinking about my goals and realized that I did have them written down in several places that were all buried somewhere - in a blog, in a notebook. I didn't have any written down where I could see them, so I dug out my old notebook and found my New Year's Resolutions to see if I'm at least on track there.
1) Complete a sprint triathlon.
Well, after attending a triathlon meeting I realized that I am no where near ready to do one of those yet, they totally scared me away. I do however think that after spending some time on my bike this spring/summer that by fall I could do one of those run/bike/run events. That would be fun!
2) Eat clean.
I'm still hit or miss with this one. I have all the books above the computer, I have all the sites bookmarked, and yet, I'm still no closer to eating 100%% clean. Every week I get better though. We are definitely eating better then we have in a long time, and we're enjoying the benefits from it!
3) Eat out once a month. Only exception is Starbuck's which is only once a week.
We did great with this one in January and February. We fell off the wagon in March, but have gotten back on track this month. Every time we eat out we say we can do so much better on our own, and we really can, so we are trying to focus on this one more as well.
4) Build up a savings.
Always a work in progress, but better now then we were last year.
5) Pay down debt.
Tax return payed off all of our debt, so we have been building savings with that money. Slowly, but surely.
6) Get to 150 lbs.
Now this one is a lot harder for me. I so badly want to get out of the 170's right now. In February I couldn't wait to get out of the 180's, and then finally it happened. Now, I have been bouncing back and forth between 175-178 for weeks. I need to start logging my food again, I always do so much better when I'm aware of what I'm putting into my mouth. This ties back into the clean eating. I need to be smarter about my choices especially after a workout. It's never good to look for food when you are hungry, it's so much better to have your list of options ready to go. Menus work well for me, I don't know why they go to the wayside.
7) Find a school and program for health and fitness.
I still want to pursue this goal. I think that no matter where Chris gets stationed I will be able to use this skill. I'm not sure if I want to look into nutritionist or trainer. I'm not a very good example of either right now, but someday all the errors and backtracking will help me help others.
8) Date nights and no computer after 930pm.
Well we've managed one date day for our wedding anniversary (thank you Crystal!). And, well, um, as far as the whole no computer after 930, um, yea, that lasted about a week. It's 11 right now and I'm still up blogging and playing.
Tomorrow I'm going to hunt for my Fitness goals and I'll blog on that one. I just started with the one I could find - LOL!

Day 29, CLX/Insanity

Tonight was the beginning of week 5, day 29 so we took our 30 day photos and measurements. Weight lost during the first 30 days - 1 lb. Huh. That's interesting. My other numbers were good, but not nearly as great as I was hoping for. I feel so much smaller, and it's an awesome feeling!
Here are my numbers:
Chest: down 1"
Arms: down 1"
Waist: down 1"
Abductor: down 1"
Thighs: down 1"
Hips: down 1"
Yep, down 1" everywhere! Too funny.
The workout tonight was supposed to be CLX Recharge. I watched it this morning, turns out it's a 20 minute Yoga video. Well, um, that just didn't seem like enough, so we did TurboFire Greatest HIIT's 20 minute workout followed by Recharge. It turned into an awesome workout with 300 calories burned - YEA!
Today we also ran. We are starting 3 days a week now. It was a great run (400 cals burned). Brandi joined us today and she wanted to try pushing the jogging strollers, so of course we let her - LOL! She took mine on one of the hills, so I took advantage of the opportunity and sprinted up that hill. Katelynn was yelling, "Go Mommy!" It was awesome. I felt so strong. I love that my workouts are making me feel this amazing!
Tomorrow is Insanity Core Cardio and Balance. Should be interesting. This whole week is going to be weird since it's Recovery Week. We do the same 2 workouts 3 times each - UGH! That's probably my least favorite part of this hybrid. Aw well, bring it on!

Day 25, CLX/Insanity

Tonight was Insanity cardio power and resistance. This one is my favorite! I can actually do every move and keep up with the video. I do have to modify some of the moves - the Power Jumps - I just do 2 squats to their 1 power jump (seriously, I could hardly walk last week, no "jumping" for me) and the Floor Sprints (running in plank position) - I just hold the plank so my back doesn't sound like rice krispies. I think my favorite is actually the very last move 8 hop squats/8 push-ups. I have no idea why, but I love them...maybe because it's the last exercise?! I do actually do the hop squats, but only because we don't go crazy high (my feet barely leave the ground, so there is  not a lot of impact). I did all those push-ups off my knees tonight too - YEAH ME!
Today was also a run day. We did 2 miles. It felt really good to run today. Steph joined is for the first time and she liked it as well. We have a nice steady pace...probably a slow one since we're pushing those fully-loaded double jogging strollers. Here are some pics from today.
I like this one because I look like I'm going really fast!
We are just getting started in this one...
All finished and sucking down our waters.

Day 23 - CLX/Insanity

Tonight was Insanity Plyo. It's probably my least favorite in the set. I do think that I'm getting a lot better at it though especially since my bugg calorie count is getting higher. That must mean I'm doing more and getting faster at it. The warm-up is not nearly as challenging as it once was, so that's good. I got new cross-trainer shoes on Saturday and I got to break them in tonight...
Pretty right?! They certainly are bright. They are super light too, I don't even feel as if I'm wearing shoes. They didn't bother my feet tonight and I still feel pretty good. I'll try them again on Thursday, hopefully they'll still be just as comfortable.
I also ran today - 2 more miles down. We had to stop a few times - just silly things. The girl I run with, Tabitha, her kids are on Spring Break so they were with us and her eldest rode her bike...she had a bunch of problems so we had to stop a few times; Denver also kicked off his shoes so I had to stop and get them...just silly stuff really. Then during Insanity tonight I had to stop a few times...I brought Denver with me and he did great until he got knocked over and then he wanted held. We were about half way into the cardio set, so the last half wasn't so great for me...I got a few things in, but not much. According to the bugg I still managed to burn almost 800 calories between running and Insanity today, so that's cool!

Day 22, CLX/Insanity

Tonight was CLX burn circuit 1 and ab burner. I bought 12 lb dumbbells on Saturday and got to break them in tonight. All the posterior fly moves I still have to use my 8's, but I was able to use the 12's on a few moves, and my 10's on others. And, yes, I carried all those weights into the gym - UGH!
I still really like ab burner, and have yet to do it without my abs burning - LOVE IT!
Tomorrow is Insanity. I messed up my back last week. I did a lot more of the moves then normal on Thursday. I normally do all the moves, but modify so I don't do as much jumping...well I had the brilliant idea that since I've been doing it for 3 weeks without any problems that I should go ahead and do the jump moves and the low runs (the ones where you run in plank position where my back makes a popping noise) - so, yea, big mistake. Friday I felt stiff but we had Insanity abs and I figured I'd do those jump moves too. UM, big mistake, huge, I have to go take back medicine now. Today is Monday and my back is feeling a bit better. I'm going to have to take it easy tomorrow and not do all the jump moves - it's Insanity Plyo, so I will definitely have to modify, modify, modify...no matter how silly I feel squatting while the other girls are jumping their little hearts out. I do want to be able to walk.
